Uncover Your Potential

Instruction book offers ways to secretly practice your game.

By Charlie SchroederPublished: March, 2005

Golfers who constantly tinker with their game will enjoy “Undercover Golf,” a clever, pocket-sized book by Joe Borgenicht.

Borgenicht takes the familiar structure of a golf instruction book and turns it on its head. The 144-page book touches on all the fundamentals — grip, swing, aim, setup, etc. — while taking readers on a whimsical journey where they can earn brownie points with loved ones and co-workers by performing tasks that secretly help the golf swing. Vacuuming never looked so appealing.

“Check that your left-hand grip is accurate by bringing the pen to your lips briefly. Your co-workers will believe you are concentrating,” Borgenicht writes in the chapter on grip. “Maintain your left-hand grip as you place the pen under the table and grip the pen with both hands.”

In the chapter on backswing motion, Borgenicht stresses the importance of arm and knee pressure under the guise of hugging your significant other.

“A compact and correct golf swing requires that you keep a slight pressure inward at the armpits and knees,” he writes. “A meaningful hug delivered from you to a significant other incorporates the same pressure. Train your golf pressure and share the love as frequently as possible.”

Some lessons that have been around for years, like gripping a ruler or sitting on a barstool for proper posture, are humorously re-examined. Borgenicht recommends holding the ruler while being forced to measure a window for drapes and envisions practicing your stance while chatting up a cutie at the bar.

As a footnote, he also suggests switching to non-alcoholic beverages if too much booze has affected your weight distribution.

The book can be enjoyed by anyone who plays the game and has a sense of humor, but will be particularly attractive to the newly-obsessed golfer. Borgenicht suggests that newcomers “practice the skills in this book from beginning to end. You’ll be better off if you develop consistent fundamentals and proper undercover habits early on.”

“Undercover Golf” is illustrated by Dan Krovatin and published by Quirk Books. It’s available at quirkbooks.com or major bookstores.
