![]() W. Timothy Gallwey got golfers thinking about the mental game when he wrote this book in 1979. Gallwey’s average score was 95 and he played only a couple times a year when he started writing “The Inner Game of Golf,” but he soon knocked 15 strokes off his game after practicing what he wrote. Compared to the recent batch of golf psychology books, Gallwey’s classic can feel a tad dated at times, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth reading. Available at major booksellers and online at www.theinnergame.com. “Golf is Not a Game of Perfect” Bob Rotella’s first and most popular book is filled with simple insights into the game and includes anecdotes and perspectives from some of the best players in the game. Rotella has established himself as the golfer’s Sigmund Freud, and his work has spawned hundreds of imitators around the world. Available at major booksellers and many online retailers. “Zen Golf” What do Buddhism, psychology and golf instruction have in common? Joseph Parent explains it all in this book that weaves anecdotes about Zen warriors into chapters such as “Empty Your Cup” and “Pebbles in the Bowl.” But don’t be afraid. Parent draws the connections between the disciplines without a lot of psychological jargon. Available at major booksellers and at www.zengolf.com. “Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book” This brilliant collection of material has introduced many golfers to Penick’s refreshingly common sense approach to teaching. Although he dedicates only one section of the book to psychology, Penick’s simple language and entertaining parables are ideal for golfers who think everything in the game has become too technical. Available at major booksellers and online retailers. “Wright Balance Focus for Success Series: The Artist’s Way for Golfers” David Wright has written five booklets that guide readers through a series of exercises intended to sharpen the mental game. The booklets are the most interactive book of the bunch and are perfect for the disciplined golfer who wants to follow specific exercises to develop the mind. The booklets focus on relaxation, concentration, visualization, mental toughness and routine. A CD accompanies each copy. Available at www.wrightbalance.com. |
