Lorena Ochoa shot a 6-under-par 66 in the final round of Sunday’s Samsung World Championship to successfully defend her title at Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert. The world’s No. 1 player posted four sub-70 rounds on the par-72, 6,462-yard Canyons Course, finishing at 18-under par. Mi-Hyun Kim finished four shots behind, while Jeong Jang and former Torrance High standout Angela Park were five back. Ochoa’s victory guarantees her a second straight Rolex Player of the Year Award. With seven wins and 16 top-five efforts in 2007, she is the first player ever to earn over $3 million in a season. “After what happened in 2006, I thought it would be hard to improve. But here I am,” Ochoa said. Park, who began Sunday one shot off the pace, finished among the top three for the fourth time during her debut campaign. She has already clinched the LPGA Rookie of the Year Award. “It’s been a long week. I tried so hard on every hole, every shot,” Park said. Michelle Wie, competing in her first LPGA event since enrolling at Stanford University, shot 71 in the final round. Her 18-over par total placed her 19th in the 20-player field. |
