Northern Trust Corporation, a banking and investment management firm with offices in Southern California, has been named the new title sponsor for the PGA Tour event in Los Angeles. The tournament, hosted annually at Riviera Country Club, had been called the Nissan Open since 1989. Nissan, which was under contract to be the event’s title sponsor through 2010, was hoping to find a way out of that contract since it recently moved its American headquarters from Gardena to Tennessee. Multiple entities were interested in taking over sponsorship, so Nissan’s wish was granted. One of those entities, Bearing Point, had initially been reported as taking over sponsorship, but those reports were never confirmed by the PGA Tour. “I can’t tell you how pleased we are to have Northern Trust,” said tournament director Tom Pulchinski. “The representatives of our new title sponsor have been excellent to work with.” Northern Trust signed a five-year contract to be the title sponsor, as the event will be known as the Northern Trust Open. Nissan will remain a corporate sponsor. While there will be no drastic differences for 2008, there are changes in store. Most notably, the purse will increase from $5.2 million to $6.2 million. The pro-am format will also be modified: groups will consistent of three amateurs instead of four, and those amateurs will be able to play a practice round prior to the pro-am. “When (patrons) first walk in the door, they will see physical changes as well as changes to the overall feel of the tournament,” Pulchinski said. The Northern Trust Open will be held from Feb. 14-17, 2008. |
