Scott Hamilton

The former Olympic gold medal skater is happy - and fortunate - to be able to spend time outdoors

By John RegerPublished: August, 2007

Though Scott Hamilton is only 5-foot-3, the former Olympic gold medal skater hits the ball farther than a lot of guys bigger than he is. A former member of Sherwood Country Club, Hamilton now lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where he plays to an eight handicap. He has appeared in many charity tournaments, including the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in January, and has successfully overcome testicular cancer and a benign brain tumor.

How often do you play?
I have a 3-year-old son, so if I'm lucky I play once a month.

How did you get into the game?
I just thought it was a great way to be outside for a change. I was stuck inside all the time in those cold, dark rinks. I was 25 when I started.

What are your favorite Southern California courses?
Sherwood, Riviera, Bel-Air and Malibu country clubs.

What course haven't you played that you want to?
Augusta National.

What was your most embarrassing moment on the golf course?
Those are constant. I stopped caring about the scoring a long time ago. I always joke with whoever I play with and try to have a good time.

What is your ultimate foursome?
Sam Snead, Fred Couples, Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer.

Best moment on the course?
The first couple of rounds after my bout with cancer. I was in Whistler, B.C., for a pro-am and I couldn't turn really well because of a scar, but I remember how happy I was to be out and doing something.

If you could change one thing about your game what would it be?
I would really like to be able to play enough not to get into those bad habits I get into.

The thing you're most proud of in golf?
That I was nicknamed "Pound for Pound" at Sherwood because I could hit the ball out there.

Most money won on golf course?
Wayne Gretzky used to do a Friday Skins Game [at Sherwood] and I think I won just about every skin one day. I think it was $800.

What is your best round?
I shot a 76 at a place I had never seen before in Colorado with a double bogey on 18. I totally choked, I remember thinking I was 2-over through 17 and that was it.

What is your favorite club in the bag?
My driver. My 7-wood is good, too. The club I have the most success with is my putter.
