A Slice of Heaven

Former ‘Charlie’s Angels’ actress writes about playing with the guys in pro-ams and how women can better understand golf — and their mates.

By Charlie SchroederPublished: October, 2005

Being an ambassador can be a real headache. Once nominated, a lot of people delve into your past and try to dig up dirt to see if you’re the right person for the job.

But Cheryl Ladd, the former Buick ambassador of golf, didn’t have to deal with lots of red tape to secure her position. All she had to do was take a call from Buick general manager Bob Coletta.

“We want you to be our golfing angel,” Coletta said, “and we’d like you to represent us at tournaments.”

“OK,” Ladd replied.

And that was that.

For four years Ladd, who’s best known for her role on “Charlie’s Angels,” traveled the country playing in pro-ams at Buick-sponsored tour events. It was a role she happily accepted.

Ladd has written a book about her experiences on the pro-am circuit titled “Token Chick: A Woman’s Guide to Golfing with the Boys.” Not only does the book tell the story of Ladd’s term as ambassador, it also chronicles her obsession with golf and travel, and, at times, instructs fledgling women golfers in the game’s fundamentals.

It’s a breezy, funny, photo-heavy read with numerous snapshots of Ladd posing with the boys on the pro-am circuit. Other pictures include some of the colorful characters she’s met while on golf vacations, including a caddy named Jimmy Kelly that Ladd and her husband met while playing in Scotland. Kelly has the mouth of a sailor but a heart of gold, and he quickly emerges as the most hilarious and touching character in “Token Chick.” Kelly’s bawdy humor is, in Ladd’s opinion, the perfect antidote for the golf jitters.

“Token Chick” doesn’t aspire to be anything more than a light-hearted golf memoir. And Ladd, who can now be seen on NBC’s “Las Vegas,” writes with a clear audience in mind: women who often find themselves abandoned by their golf-obsessed better half. For them, this book might finally explain what all the fuss is about.

If Ladd has her way, her insight might help save a few relationships. Take the chapter dedicated to how golf can improve your sex life. Ladd and her husband, it seems, like to bet when they play, but not for money. Instead, they wager on “quiet dinners, deep massages and other things.”

Apparently the former angel has a devilish side, too.
