One on One with...Fred Funk

Fred Funk reached the pinnacle of his career with his win at The Players Championship in March.

By Glenn MondayPublished: May, 2005

Known as one of the straightest drivers of the ball ever, he led the Tour in accuracy off the tee last year. Los Angeles teaching pro Glenn Monday discovers why Funk, who turns 49 in June, is playing some of the best golf of his career.

GLENN: Fred, what do you work on the most with your swing?
FRED: I’m working on better balance. Balance determines my tempo. I’m finding better tempo and that has helped the overall aesthetics of my swing get better.

GLENN: Any other swing thoughts?
FRED: Yes. I like to start from a good, solid position. I work on posture, alignment and ball position. The complete set up.

GLENN: Do you think and swing?
FRED: I visualize the framework of a good golf swing and I can picture myself swinging around an axis point. On the golf course I’m very target-oriented and trust my swing. Sometimes when I’m playing well and my set up is how I like it, I’m swinging on autopilot.

GLENN: When you play well, what kind of swing feel stands out?
FRED: I feel as if my glove hand is accelerating through the ball and my grip pressure is 60 percent with the left and 40 percent with the right.

GLENN: Have all of your dreams come true?
FRED: I’m living a dream.
